Busy, Busy, Busy!

IMPORTANT:  Please turn in you paperwork package as soon as possible.  Remember tomorrow is Friday, and dismissal is at 11:45am.  PLEASE ENSURE ALL OF YOUR CHILD'S BELONGINGS ARE LABELED.  We are finding things on a daily basis and do not always know who to return them to.

Ms. Kelly's Characters had another fantastic day!  Here is a summary of all of the things we worked on:

Literacy:  We have been practicing HOMOPHONES, focusing on 'your' and 'you're'.  Students are being encouraged to say "you are" to themselves in the sentence to see whether or not is makes sense, before choosing their answer.  Since school started, we have written letters to our teacher and written a letter to one of the characters in our novel, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, giving them advice about how to find solutions to problems they have been facing in the book.

All students have now completed a basic reading assessment, so everyone will have 1-2 books in their reading bins for Guided Reading which will begin on Monday.  Tasks will look a little but different this year due to social distancing guidelines, but there will be a variety of educational activities to complete independently.

Social Studies:  We have been working on identifying the 7 continents and 6 major bodies of water (5 oceans as well as Hudson Bay).  Today, we also learned where the 10 provinces and 3 territories go on the map of Canada.  Using directional statements, we are beginning to learn how to explain where each of the provinces and territories are in relation to one another.  For example, one student stated, "British Columbia is one province WEST of Alberta".

Math:  We are continuing to explore number sense and relationships with numbers up to 9,999, focusing on PLACE VALUE.  We have also begun a review on graphing.  Today, we surveyed the class and created a Birthday Graph.

Secret Question:  Can your child explain the difference between PLACE and VALUE?  If so, have them bring me their answer on a sheet of paper with their name, and I will put it in the draw bucket.

Tomorrow, if we are able to finish up our work from the week in a timely manner, we will go outside for some of our other learning tasks.
